A lot has been made of the coach firing but lets not forget Bruce Allen.
What got him fired… Mostly because he was perceived as seemingly a “packaged deal” with Gruden and his talent evaluation in draft has been below average. But lets talk about those…
He was certainly Grudens right hand man but the question would be…Was he not able to say “no” to Gruden? I would guess that he did say no and said it a lot but that truly is just a guess as they did a great job of keeping most items in house, under wraps. Teamwork and a shared vision are not bad things and as long as he did have a way to excercise his authority.
Certain draft picks were worse than others and overall there werent many great ones. How much of that falls back on the GM and how much of that is the scouting departments fault? Again, very hard to tell but unless he is overriding scouts and position coaches thoughts and opinions then it cant all be his fault.
What did he do really well? We always had draft picks in camp on time. He leaves us with a surplus of cap room while being handed a deficit when he first began. A lot of coach/GMs are spent to the max on overpaying for players. There have been a lot of over the top contracts given out over the last couple years and i was very happy that it wasnt us offering them. If anything, we have more bargains on this team than overpriced players. He also had supreme knowledge of all phases of the game…as a former player, agent, and front office guru he knew the ins and outs and used it to his and our advantage.
For all the “alienating” of players Gruden supposedly did…the ability to get great contracts done and people in camp must not be overlooked.
