Buccaneers Trade TE Alex Smith To The Pats

AUTHOR: Dustin Staggers | IN: Draft | COMMENTS: 3 Comments |

Former 3rd round pick Alex Smith has been traded to the Patriots for an undisclosed draft pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.  I’ve checked multiple outlets to try and determine the pick that is being sent to the Bucs, but knowing the Pats, I would imagine it is a performance based pick that is around the 4th-6th round region.

Smith was the 7th pick in the third round by the Bucs in the 2005 draft.  He showed some promise in his rookie season catching 41 balls for 367 yards.  He was a consistent player for the Bucs but became expendable with the acquisition of Kellen Winslow via trade and the re-signing of Jerramy Stevans.

Smith isn’t much on the blocking end of the spectrum as far as TE’s are concerned but he is a reliable target as a receiver, and my guess, is that he’ll be a 50 catch player for the Pats next season.

Another player who showed promise early but never developed. He is a “block decent, catch OK” old-fashioned TE & the Pats will find uses for him.
My guess is he brought a 6, maybe moving to a 5, depending on playing time.

The Bucs signed TE Ryan Purvis. I saw him play on TV a couple times in 2007 w/ Matt Ryan. He was pretty impressive in the short-to-medium routes, & watched the ball into his hands very well. Rated a 7th-rounder by “Lindy’s” & The War Room, & a 4th or 5th by “USA Today.” He may make the PS methinks.

TAMPA – For those of you keeping score at home, it was a fifth-round pick in next year’s draft that the Bucs got back from the Patriots in the Alex Smith trade.

Smith was deemed expendable after the Bucs traded for tight end Kellen Winslow and re-signed tight end Jerramy Stevens.

The Bucs gave up a second-round pick in this year’s draft and a fifth next year for Winslow. They now have the fifth back.
