Buccaneers Week 4 Analysis

by News

In what many people predicted would be the Buccaneers first win of the season, the Bucs fell again to the Redskins, 16-13 to fall to 0-4.

For the first time in 4 games, there were actually some positives to take from the game.

  1. Josh Johnson, before having some success running the ball, showed some nice patience in the pocket and a real zip on his throws.   This regressed throughout the game, but he showed some glimpses.
  2. Antonio Bryant finally looked healthy.
  3. We ran the ball more than 20 times with our RB’s, thank god.
  4. We sacked Jason Campbell 3 times, and picked him off 3 times as well.
  5. Gaines Adams showed up.
  6. Aqib Talib’s picks were impressive
  7. We led the game in Time of Possession.

I did have a lot of issues with the game though.  My main issues are the same as they have been for a few games.   A seeming lack of fundamentals.  We still are missing too many tackles, and the discipline in the secondary, despite the 3 INT’s was the difference in the game.

We only had 4 drives over 3 plays, two of which were 12 play drives, and both resulted in only field goals;  we still aren’t dynamic enough offensively to punch balls into the endzone.  The second half of the game consisted of five different 3 and out series, and the one 12 play drive that was mainly Cadillac Williams marching the ball down the field.  In hindsight it’s easy to wonder why Clifton Smith got the last play of the game for the Bucs, a play that he fumbled and ended our game, but I still have to wonder why an effective Cadillac Williams didn’t receive the ball in that situation.

Mike Nugent was awful once again, and I would be surprised if we didn’t bring in a few kickers this week (Graham Gano, Matt Bryant) and potentially replace Nugent this week.

My hopes for this season haven’t really changed much, because our schedule doesn’t get any easier, but at least there were a few positives to take away from this game.  I’m going to spare the coaching staff in this particular post because I know some of you guys are probably tired of hearing me rail them consistently, but check back later in week and I might have changed my mind!

***I have a long list of coaching gripes from this game too.
