Situation Is Becoming Ideal For The Next Coach

With the Buccaneers now sitting at 0-6 and no end in sight to our losing, I have unfortunately started thinking about next season for the Bucs.

Raheem Morris, who barring success in his first season was going to enter his 2nd season as a lame duck coach anyway (only has a 2 year deal), will not be the coach of this team next season.  There are glaring issues with the coaching, and too many players already saying some things that you never want to hear, stuff that lets you know the locker room is starting to be divided and that the coach may have lost it.

With the trade of Gaines Adams the other day though, the Buccaneers now have 10 picks in the 2010 NFL draft.  With our current record, and the look of the team thusfar, the chances that we don’t end up with a top 3 pick, seem slim to none.  There is a good chance that we could have the first pick in the draft.

There has been a lot of talk the last few years about the fact that teams don’t want the first pick because of the financial investment needed to secure that draft pick.  While this is very true, and will probably be a big issue in the next CBA, it might not really be as big of a deal to the Buccaneers.  We currently have the lowest payroll in the league, and barring a resigning of a slew of players at high dollar values, we will enter the offseason in the same position.

So…we have the lowest payroll in the league, 10 draft picks, and possibly the first pick in the draft.   There are also a slew of big name coaches out there who the Bucs could look at.  Bill Cowher, Brian Billick, Mike Shanahan, Mike Holmgren are all available.  Does Shanahan and his son Kyle, a rising offensive guy in the league sound intriguing?  To me, very much so.  What better situation to walk into for a new coach, then a slew of money (even if there is no cap, we’re still so far under that we could splurge in FA and be right on par with every other team) lots of draft picks, and the chance to get any player they covet.  Add to that a list of valuable young players including Barrett Ruud, Aqib Talib, Tanard Jackson, Davin Joseph, Cadillac Williams, Jeff Faine and Donald Penn and there are some pieces in place to build a team around.

All of this is obviously just speculation, but when your team is 0-6 and showing no signs of improvement, I have to look towards the future right?

The big problem w/ bringing in a new coach is also a possible solution, i.e., deciding nether Josh is the answer at QB & starting over from Square One. Plus the players on both sides of the ball have to learn new schemes–again. There is no quick & easy salvation waiting just around the corner.

  2. Agree, but I also don’t think that keep a coach who isn’t suited for the job is a better option than cutting your losses.

    Can’t argue with that.
