Today these here internets went crazy after some enthusiastic wahoo on the Nike forums did mock-ups of some new NFL uniforms. Nike will be taking over as the official outfitter of the NFL in 2012 after Reebok’s current contract ends. The idea is terrifying to many. While Nike is a very cutting-edge company in terms of making newer, better materials for athletics and training, their fashion sense is questionable.
Anyone that has seen their college pro-combat series can probably get an idea of what I’m talking about. Nike doesn’t really have much regard for tradition or even a school’s colors. Take for instance the Florida State pro-combat uniform from a year ago that was red and black, it looked cool but the Seminoles wear gold and garnet. Nike tends to take liberties with their uniform designs, changing colors, adding superfluous stripes and piping. I’m pretty sure at the beginning of this year they inadvertently redesigned Boise State’s logo.
That’s only going to get worse in the NFL, and today’s set of NFL pro-combat mock-ups (which I repeat are unofficial and not authentic) certainly played on those fears for a number of people. You can get a better look at the Buccaneers’ mock-up by clicking the photo above. A lot of other teams’ were awful, I actually didn’t mind this one so much. I miss Bucco Bruce and his slightly effeminate, swashbuckling wink. As I said, these aren’t official, they’re just for fun. The real Nike pro-combats will probably be much worse. But what do you think? Post your thoughts in the comments.
