Despite being 10-6 over the course of the year, the Buccaneers were shut out of the
Pro Bowl this year. After the rosters were announced, however, it was reported that Josh Freeman and Donald Penn were listed as alternates for the game. The league does not usually specify whether players are first or second alternates, but it sounds like Penn may be named to the squad this week.
The reason is that now that the Pro Bowl is the week before the Super Bowl, the participants from the teams in the Super Bowl are excused from the Pro Bowl rosters. This means that Chad Clifton from the Green Bay Packers would be off the roster, opening up a spot for Penn. This is, of course, contingent on the fact that Penn is the first alternate. He had an excellent year for the Bucs as he was the only lineman to start all 16 games and rarely gave up a sack all year. He should have been on the roster in the first place, as Jordan Gross of the Panthers made is mostly on his reputation over Penn. Penn also had one more touchdown reception than on the year. Stay tuned this week to see which replacements are named to the rosters.
