It has just come out that a felony warrant has been issued for Aqib Talib and his mother. His mother has already turned herself in. Talib was involved in a shooting in which he allegedly attempted to pistol whip and fired shots at his sister’s ex-boyfriend. The incident occurred March 21, in Garland, Texas. Talib has had trouble with the law in the past and now faces charges that could land him in jail from 2-20 years if convicted.
Hopefully none of the alleged is true and Talib will be fully exonerated. But even if found not guilty the Bucs’ talented young corner is still libel to face a steep suspension when NFL business resumes and the Bucs are now faced with yet another character question. I absolutely love watching Talib play, but the Bucs need to start looking at other corners because it’s becoming harder to rely on him. I won’t say the team should sever ties until all the facts come out. But they do need to look into who is going to be starting opposite Ronde Barber next year.
EJ Biggers played well when Talib went down at the end of last season. Myron Lewis has also played well at times and could have a bright future as well. The likelihood is that one of the two will be starting next season, at least while Talib sits out a suspension. Typically Raheem Morris and Mark Dominik have been very willing to look past indiscretions when talent is there. But even last year there was chatter that the Bucs had some volatility, that they were littered with bad eggs. Now Morris and Dominik are certainly going to feel plenty of outside pressure to make a decisive stand.
Another option could be to go get Nnamdi Asomugha. The Bucs have plenty of money to spend to lure a big time corner and he brings the type of integrity and character that would smooth over some of the bad PR. I’m not saying the Bucs should go get a player because they should care about what other people think, but it is a nice perk that comes with signing the elite corner. Asomugha would be a good fit for the Bucs provided they were willing to spend the money and it wouldn’t be bad to replace one shut-down corner with another.
Either way, bad day for the Bucs and Talib.
