Report: Judge to Force Medation in Lockout

ESPN has reported today that there will actually be a quicker than expected

Are we making progress this week?

ruling in the court battle between the players and owners.  The article states:

Judge Susan Richard Nelson told the NFL and NFL players that she will impose forced mediation on them early this week, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The key issue is where the mediation will be.  The owners would like it to take place in Washington D.C. with a similar type of mediator as they had previously before the players walked out. The players, on the other hand, appear to want to do the mediation in Minnesota with a court mediator.   Judge Nelson is rumored to be making a decision about the location sometime this week.

This is good progress as far as I am concerned as I felt (like most people), that this would drag on for weeks with the judge making a ruling down the line and then the “losing” side appealing.  Also, a deal will be made sooner if the sides talk to each other rather than to the media about each other.

What I don’t know is that if the judge has the authority to make both sides participate with the mediation type that she chooses.  For the good of the game, I hope she does.
