The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the last team with their proverbial line in the water. With the Colts’ hiring of Chuck Pagano the coaching searches of every other NFL franchise has come and gone, and yielded results. Some teams have even managed to hire GM’s in this time. And all the while the Bucs have sat around with their line in the water.
The Raiders canned a GM and a coach, replaced each and managed to do it in less time than it’s taken the Bucs to interview their first finalist. The Colts announced today that they had hired a coach, they had been coachless less than a week before bringing in another to take the job and start rebuilding.
Meanwhile, the Bucs’ struggles have been well-documented.
Now it’s time to make a decision in Tampa. The Glazers and Mark Dominik have reportedly spoken to Mike Sherman a second time about the position. Yesterday Rick Stroud reported Sherman was a finalist, but also mentioned nobody had been ruled out.
If there are any other finalists, the Bucs need to announce it now and finalize this search. It’s gone on long enough. With the exception of the teams that fired their coaches in the season the Bucs had as long as anyone to conduct their search. At this point if their are stones left unturned it’s on the men running the search.
So make a decision and go with it. Interview the men you need to interview, make an announcement by the weekend. There’s too much to fix to wait around any longer. The new coach needs to start learning the roster, scouting his own players and figuring out how to use his own guys before they start hitting camps.
Dominik needs to turn his attention to the draft and evaluating players.
And more than anything, this means the Bucs are getting last crack at coordinators. Everyone else is already out interviewing assistants and looking at ways to improve their staffs. The Bucs haven’t even hired a coach who can start to explore options yet. They’re getting a bad jump on building a good coaching staff, something that is almost as crucial as the head coaching hire.
Things cannot drag on much longer, the Bucs need to wrap up this coaching search by the end of the week. The longer the wait, the longer they get behind.
