Report: Buccaneers to Hire Rutgers’ Greg Schiano

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is now reporting that this Buccaneers coaching search may have taken the most bizarre turn yet and that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reached out to Rutgers’ Greg Schiano about the coaching position.

If this is true it’s frankly shocking to me, Schiano was never mentioned and despite having been a coordinator on some very good Miami Hurricanes teams in the late 90′s and early 2000′s, he hasn’t really done anything at Rutgers in the past decade.

Schiano is a 45 year-old coach who has three years of NFL experience coaching on the Chicago Bears during the 90′s as a defensive assistant for two years before being promoted to coach the defensive backfield. This is another out of left-field candidate and I’m going to be extremely interesting to see what the Bucs are reportedly offering. The reason is that he’s hardly the most qualified or even the most attractive candidate, he’s a game over .500 all-time in his career at Rutgers and outside of working at Miami for a while in has never been associated with winning football.

I’m not trying to put a damper on the potential hire. Just saying that at first glance it looks like the Buccaneers completely blew this one.
