Revis Update: Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Owners Want Revis, But Not At The Cost of a First Round Pick

As we reported last night, rumors have been flying around the NFL Twitter world that connect Darrelle Revis and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs seem to be the most likely destination for Revis, but the Jets are not communicating with Revis’ camp, and the Buccaneers don’t seem to be offering what the Jets want.

And for good reason.

It seems the Jets are looking for a first round pick for Revis, according to Yahoo Sports, and considering the lack of interest in the All Pro corner, and his expiring contract, they’re unlikely to find a suitor. And if they do find a team willing to trade a first round pick, it would be a pick much lower than the 13th selection the Buccaneers currently hold. The Buccaneer’s first round pick is too valuable, and the owners have stated it’s not worth trading for the current Jet defender.

The same Yahoo report states that the Buccaneers owners are fully behind a deal for Revis, at the right price. The normally hated Glazers appear willing to open their checkbook to sign a Wayne Rooney for their American franchise, it seems. This is encouraging, as support from ownership is a big step in making a blockbuster trade.

The Jets owe Darrelle Revis a roster bonus that pays out this weekend, and there are whispers that he would be traded by then. The bonus is “only” a million dollars, and in the grand scheme of things, the Jets may eat the cost to get the right deal for him. It will be interesting to see what the Buccaneers are willing to offer to bring Revis on board, and how far apart they are from the Jets’ demands. As the recap of the Yahoo story suggests, if the Jets are looking for a deal similar to the one the Vikings got for Percy Harvin, they’re barking up the wrong tree.

Revis will also need to come back to America, as he’s apparently on a vacation in Europe, and prove to teams (like the Bucs) that he’s recovering well from his torn ACL. There are hoops to jump through to get a deal done, and we’re likely still multiple days away from finding out more.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted as more information is made available about the Darrelle Revis situation.
