The Buccaneers’ official website has released the official dates of offseason camps and workouts, so we’re that much closer to seeing men dressed in red and pewter on a field doing football related activities.
There are multiple phases to offseason workouts. Phase one is simply strength and conditioning, and will begin April 15th for Tampa Bay. This is just a phase to allow players to work themselves back into shape.
Phase two is when players can start working out with their position coaches. There are no scrimmages and no offense versus defense, but coaches and run players through drills for their positions and get them back into the basic mechanics of their roles on the team.
Phase three is when the more traditional scrimmage-type activities start to happen. Phase three is mainly comprised of OTA’s and a mini-camp spread over the course of a month.
The website shows the following dates for “OTA’s” (Organized Team Activity days):
- May 20-21, 2013
- May 23, 2013
- May 29-31, 2013
- June 3-4, 2013
- June 6-7, 2013
It also states that June 11-13 will be mandatory mini-camp. By this time, we’ll start hearing reports and getting information about battles for positions, and the health of injured players.
There will also be rookie workouts and minicamps that have not been fully announced. There is typically a post-draft minicamp, and then other workouts over the course of the summer for newcomers.
Training camp dates have yet to be announced, and the NFL schedule for 2013 will not be announced until April. So there is still more information to come.
