Tampa Bay Buccaneers Will Try to Trade Back Into First Round of 2013 NFL Draft

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers notably traded away the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft to acquire Darrelle Revis, and left themselves without a selection in tonight’s draft festivities. That means the draft party being held at Raymond James Stadium tonight is more of an introduction party for Darrelle Revis and free agent signing Dashon Goldson.

Or is it?

Many media sources have been speculating over the past few days that the Buccaneers would like to move back into the first round to make a selection at the bottom of the Thursday night portion of the draft. Pat Yasinskas of’s NFC South Blog had this to say about Mark Dominik’s intentions.

Dominik acknowledged Monday that he at least has thought about scenarios where he would consider getting back into the first round.

One other thing to keep in mind: When Dominik drafted Martin last year, he explained that part of the reason he made the deal was because players that are drafted in the first round can be given five-year deals, while anyone after the first round can’t get anything more than a four-year deal.

That’s important to Dominik.

That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes a trade to get back into the first round.

The five-year deal aspect of selecting in the first round is huge. That’s why I strongly believe that Tampa Bay fans will see the Buccaneers make a draft pick tonight. Having an additional year of a team-friendly rookie deal is the kind of smart business that Mark Dominik has put on display this offseason.

There is no one position that the Buccaneers “need”, but their draft board will feature players that they see as more valuable than others. So while it was previously considered a no-brainer that the Bucs would take a cornerback, we may now see the Buccaneers target a linebacker, defensive lineman, tight end, or even a running back or wide receiver. Also, an offensive tackle may be in order for the Bucs, should one fall to a place where they want to take one.

There are plenty of trade partners at the bottom of the first round, so stay alert as the draft enters the latest hours of Thursday night. There is a very good chance the Buccaneers may have one more player on the roster by the end of the night. So the draft party tonight may actually feature the Buccaneers making a selection by the time the night is over.

Leave a comment below on what players or positions you think the Buccaneers should target tonight!
