Pewter and Read: Buccaneers News and Opinions from Around the League, July 5th, 2013

It’s Friday! Time to catch up after a day off and give you the latest stories from around the web with another edition of Pewter and Read.

  • Over at NFL.com, Bucky Brooks has some positive things to say about Luke Stocker. Well, positive in that he thinks he’ll do better this year because Josh Freeman needs someone to throw the ball to that isn’t 20 yards downfield. Stocker has the physical tools to be a standout player at tight end. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he breaks out this season.
  • By now, I am sure you’ve heard all about Ron Jaworski’s comments on Josh Freeman. If not, review them by clicking here. In summary, Jaws thinks that Freeman is an enigma, that he has too much talent to be where he his this far into his career. I have never been a big fan of Jaws, but he’s certainly got this one right. But I don’t think any of this is a reason to be down on Freeman, but it is a reason to pause before being too confident in the Bucs’ signal caller.
  • But Jaws can only watch tape of Josh Freeman. Demar Dotson sees him every day, and he was yet another player to give a public endorsement for Number Five. Mark Cook over at Pewter Report quotes Dotson as saying that Freeman is great, and confident he’s going to have a strong 2013. And while it’s rare for teammates to be openly negative about a teammate, it’s also trendy to be negative about Josh Freeman in the media. So take both quotes for what they’re worth.
  • And over at ESPN.com, Pat Yasinskas has this article updating his top 25 in the NFC South, and at number 12 is Carl Nicks. Nicks was an amazing player before his injury, and hopefully he’s back at 100% next year. It’s impossible to judge how different the 2012 season could have been with Nicks and Davin Joseph healthy for 16 games.

That’s it for this week. Join us again this weekend for another edition of Pewter and Read.
