According to a tweet from Pewter Report, Eric Wright has failed to pass his physical with the San Francisco 49ers, therefore voiding the previously agreed upon trade. The Buccaneers are expected to release Wright.
What a tumultuous few days for Eric Wright and the Buccaneers. First he gets traded, then we get the news of the DUI arrest, then he fails a physical and gets cut.
Well, the headache is now over. Eric Wright will not be in Tampa Bay, he won’t be on the Bucs schedule (for now), and we’ll move forward with Leonard Johnson, Johnthan Banks, and others to fill his shoes.
Wright always had the talent to play, and while healthy was a solid option as a second cornerback for the Buccaneers. But he just couldn’t stay out of trouble. The 4 game PED suspension looked as if it would be enough for the Bucs to cut ties with Wright, but when he agreed to the drastically reduced contract it appeared he was given a second chance.
But with his second DUI arrest in as many years, it appeared as though Mark Dominik, Greg Schiano, and the rest of the organization had enough.
The question I have is whether the 49ers knew about the most recent arrest when they agreed to the deal. If they didn’t, it seems rather likely that they found out and made that physical a little more difficult than the norm. If not, it leaves me to wonder what he may have done to fail what usually comes as a foregone conclusion.
Either way, Eric Wright is not a Buccaneer and not a 49er. At the moment, he’s not even in the NFL.
Update: So the 49ers did know Wright had been arrested.
