The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have a new head coach very soon, as a report indicates the Buccaneers have already met with the former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith.
Not only does Brandt point out the timing of the interview, but he indicates what many have thought to be the case about Smith and the Glazers: Lovie’s connections to Tampa are strong.
Smith’s familiarity to Tampa and to the Buccaneers means he has people in his network that are close to the Glazers, and the “background checks” and pre-interview work on Smith had already been done before Monday’s interview.
At this point, the Glazers are likely considering the information gathered from the interview, while Smith considers whatever other options are open to him. The fact that Smith left without a contract doesn’t mean the deal will never get done, as Smith appears to be the favorite for the job even at this stage.
But then again, these are the Glazers. Anyone who states with absolute certainty that he knows what the Glazers will do is fooling himself, as the owners of the Buccaneers don’t talk about team decisions with leaky sources.
The pairing of Smith and the Buccaneers seems quite obvious, and maybe too good to be true. But since the two sides have apparently already met, it could be just a matter of time before an announcement is made.
