As it turns out, good coaches don’t send away great players just because they don’t fit their “preferred system.”
Just days after a bogus narrative hit the internet about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers getting rid of Darrelle Revis because he’s too expensive to be a “Tampa 2 corner,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network set the record straight with thoughts from one of his sources about the plans Lovie Smith has for the league’s best corner.
Revis was never going to be let go, but this report from Rapoport is further proof that Lovie Smith is a more than just a Tampa 2 drone. He’s a football coach with years of experience as a leader of great defenses. He knows how to use any kind of player, and will use Revis to the fullest extent of his abilities.
Darrelle Revis himself tweeted that he’s excited to work with Lovie Smith soon after he was hired, and there’s little doubt that the two can combine to help the Tampa Bay defense reach elite levels.
Lovie Smith has the players at his disposal to lead one of the best defenses in the NFL. Getting rid of one of the best players on his roster was never going to happen. Look for Darrelle Revis, two years removed from his ACL injury, to have a huge year in 2013 with the right coaches on the sideline.
