After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel and Jimmy Garoppolo in for pre draft visits, the Bucs projected 2014 starting quarterback Josh McCown has no problem whatsoever if the Bucs did decide to draft a player at his position.
“If you’re saying a first-round quarterback, you never know, but if you’re picking somebody in the first round you’re hoping they help your team at some point,” he said to the media at One Buc Place. “My focus won’t shift. My focus is, like I said before – whether it’s me or Mike Glennon or Mike Kafka or somebody else – for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterbacks to play good football and to help their team win football games. That wouldn’t change.”
McCown didn’t stop there, emphasizing once again, that it’s all about the Bucs winning games.
“If we pick a young guy at that spot, lets help him get ready too,” McCown said. “We’re picking him there because we’re thinking he can help us win games, if you’re picking somebody that early. Absolutely. It’s about helping us win football games.”
Of course, no one knows besides a few select people inside One Buc Place if the Bucs will in fact draft a quarterback, but one person who apparently will embrace it will be McCown. While McCown emphasized the Bucs taking a quarterback with their seventh overall pick, there also remains a high chance that the Bucs draft a quarterback in the later rounds instead.
It’s clear that McCown isn’t seen as the franchise quarterback – he’s 34-years-old. However, as of right now he is the starter, and perhaps more importantly, he’s a mentor for the young players on the roster and is willing to help develop the other quarterbacks on the roster.
McCown’s leadership has already been praised by kicker Connor Barth, who said last week, “You can just tell, having a veteran guy in like Josh McCown, he kind of brings more of a leadership role. You can just tell the difference in that perspective because you want your quarterback to be a leader. It’s just great seeing the guys coming together.’’
It isn’t surprising that McCown is open to an addition at quarterback. From all accounts he is a classy individual who has his teammates and franchises best interests at heart. The fact he would welcome more competition to his position further illustrates that.
