Josh McCown Would Welcome Tampa Bay Buccaneers Drafting a Quarterback

After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers brought Teddy Bridgewater, Johnny Manziel and Jimmy Garoppolo in for pre draft visits, the Bucs projected 2014 starting quarterback Josh McCown has no problem whatsoever if the Bucs did decide to draft a player at his position.

“If you’re saying a first-round quarterback, you never know, but if you’re picking somebody in the first round you’re hoping they help your team at some point,” he said to the media at One Buc Place. “My focus won’t shift. My focus is, like I said before – whether it’s me or Mike Glennon or Mike Kafka or somebody else – for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterbacks to play good football and to help their team win football games. That wouldn’t change.”

McCown didn’t stop there, emphasizing once again, that it’s all about the Bucs winning games.

“If we pick a young guy at that spot, lets help him get ready too,” McCown said. “We’re picking him there because we’re thinking he can help us win games, if you’re picking somebody that early. Absolutely. It’s about helping us win football games.”

Of course, no one knows besides a few select people inside One Buc Place if the Bucs will in fact draft a quarterback, but one person who apparently will embrace it will be McCown. While McCown emphasized the Bucs taking a quarterback with their seventh overall pick, there also remains a high chance that the Bucs draft a quarterback in the later rounds instead.

It’s clear that McCown isn’t seen as the franchise quarterback – he’s 34-years-old. However, as of right now he is the starter, and perhaps more importantly, he’s a mentor for the young players on the roster and is willing to help develop the other quarterbacks on the roster.

McCown’s leadership has already been praised by kicker Connor Barth, who said last week, “You can just tell, having a veteran guy in like Josh McCown, he kind of brings more of a leadership role. You can just tell the difference in that perspective because you want your quarterback to be a leader. It’s just great seeing the guys coming together.’’

It isn’t surprising that McCown is open to an addition at quarterback. From all accounts he is a classy individual who has his teammates and franchises best interests at heart. The fact he would welcome more competition to his position further illustrates that.

Thats great news. He will probably out perform a rookie and Second year Glennon anyway.

Probably ? He will out perform Glennon with no problem. Glennon will be a back up quarterback unless he moves to another team. My picks have changed a bit in the last few weeks or so. I formally believe that the BUCS. should take a receiver first then pick up a Q.B. Then work from there as far as picking up a T.E. then work on getting some depth on the o-line. The defense is looking pretty good to me but it wouldn’t hurt to pick up some depth there also. But as of right now I would pick up a W.R. , Q.B. , T.E. in that order. But of course what I think or what you think it’s all going to come down to LOVIE SMITH. And of course what the other teams who pick before the BUCS. PICK!!! These drafts change almost daily.

Josh McCown knows that he’s only our next franchise Quarterback’s mentor! Watch fans!

Hey Victorbarney, Haven’t heard from you in a while. But once again I have to agree with you. I can’t wait for this draft to be over it’s driving me nuts. Reading some of these comments on the PEWTER PLANK just drivesw me crazy. It’s like the just write what others write. I at least try to do my home work first. I don’t think they will pick up a Q.B. 1st. I’m thinking they will pick a W.R. 1st then a Q.B. but it all depends on who picks who first. So it changes daily. But I’m thinking it will go something like this: 1st a W.R. 2nd a Q.B. then after that who knows maybe a T.E. or adding more depth on the o-line? I wish LOVIE would at least give us a hint or two.

I agree with you on all counts, but I do trust Lovie to give us very successful surprises. Just watch…

It would be great if LOVIE would at least give us a hint of what he has in mind. This draft more then most drafts in the past is driving me a little nuts. Just give us a small hint. I thought I had some kind of idea what LOVIE was up tp but now , not to sure ? But I do think he will pick a W.R. 1st. then a Q.B. after that ??????????????????????????????????????????
