Word broke last week that Lovie Smith is really infatuated with Johnny Manziel and held him in high regard.
Today, ESPN.com’s Vaughn McClure cited a league source in a report that stated that Manziel is on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ “short list” of players they are considering to draft with their first round pick. No word on how short that list is at this point.
The Buccaneers have been hosting quite a few quarterbacks at One Buc Place, including Johnny Football, but there’s no telling if he’ll actually be available when the Buccaneers pick at #7. In our two fan interactive mock drafts, Manziel went third to the Jags and fourth to the Browns.
Tampa Bay currently has free agent signee Josh McCown, Mike Glennon, and Mike Kafka on their roster at quarterback. They got their first work in the new offense during yesterday’s voluntary minicamp, and Lovie Smith said they all performed well.
Besides quarterback, the Bucs have draft needs at wide receiver, offensive line, and the sam linebacker position.
I’ve already mentioned how I think Manziel would affect the Bucs’ franchise in a previous column, and this news points towards that possibly becoming a reality.
We don’t know who else they are considering at this time, but we can definitely confirm that Tampa Bay looks at Manziel and sees their potential franchise quarterback.
