With six other teams placed ahead of the Buccaneers in the draft order for Thursday night, it is key for them to pay attention to what other teams are looking to do with their selections.
The Raiders may have made their intentions a little clearer.
A report from Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Gate claims that the Oakland Raiders “aren’t really considering drafting Manziel or Bortles at No. 5.”
Why is this relevant to the Bucs?
Well, if this report is true, and the Raiders aren’t focusing on drafting a quarterback in the first round, then the Buccaneers have one less team to worry about in their quest for a QB. However, if Tampa Bay is holding out hope for a guy like Sammy Watkins, Khalil Mack, or Mike Evans, then the Bucs now know that they will have more competition in play for one of these players.
Could it be a smokescreen? Sure.
But the report was not centralized around that quote. It was thrown in by Tafur at the end, as if it was already common knowledge amongst Oakland Raider beat writers. That leads me to believe that any “source” leaking that information would have no intentions to misguide anyone.
To keep it simple: if the Buccaneers really want a quarterback at No. 7, then things may have gotten a little easier.
If not, the competition to land whatever player they want just got a little tougher.
