With the draft in the rear window now, rosters are beginning to take shape. The rosters teams have are what they will likely take into training camp and pre-season unless they make a few transactions.
There is some roster turnover at the end of the pre-season as teams make cuts to get down to the 53-man rosters so teams will often sign players who have just been cut. However, those players very rarely walk into a starting gig with a new team.
But the point is that what we see today on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster will likely be what we see heading into week 1 on September 7 vs. Carolina Panthers.
NFL.com released their predictions for what the Bucs’ starting line-up will be come September. This is of course assuming there are no injuries.
Their predictions are as follows:
|QB||JOSH MCCOWN||DE||MICHAEL JOHNSON|
|RB||DOUG MARTIN||DT||GERALD MCCOY|
|WR 1||VINCENT JACKSON||DT||AKEEM SPENCE / CLINTON MCDONALD|
|WR 2||MIKE EVANS||DE||WILLIAM GHOLSTON|
|TE 1||BRANDON MYERS||MLB||MASON FOSTER|
|TE 2||AUSTIN SEFERIAN-JENKINS||WLB||LAVONTE DAVID|
|LT||ANTHONY COLLINS||CB 1||ALTERRAUN VERNER|
|LG||CARL NICKS / ONIEL COUSINS||CB 2||JOHNTHAN BANKS|
|C||EVAN DIETRICH-SMITH||SS||MARK BARRON|
|RG||JAMON MEREDITH / PATRICK OMAMEH||FS||DASHON GOLDSON|
|RT||DEMAR DOTSON||S||MAJOR WRIGHT|
A few observations:
• Interesting that Tim Wright is overlooked at tight end. It’s a position the Bucs have a lot of depth at now and there is a chance Wright is moved back to receiver, the position he played in college. It’ll be interesting to see how the Bucs utilize him moving forward.
• Neither Kadeem Edwards nor Kevin Pamphile, the two offensive lineman the Bucs drafted, are projected as starters. What’s more surprising is to see Oniel Cousins and Patrick Omameh in consideration to be a starter.
• I’m not sure why there is no strongside linebacker listed.
• Glad to see William Gholston is getting the recognition he deserves. He’s primed for a big sophomore season.
Over the next couple of weeks, I’m going to be examining the depth the Bucs have at every position so keep an eye out for that.
