Josh McCown is the 19th best quarterback in the National Football League.
That is according to a recent article by Any Given Sunday. It had been a while since I had read a story ranking the NFL’s quarterbacks from 1-32 so the story caught my eye — I just didn’t expect to see McCown so high.
Hold on: two-time Super Bowl winner Eli Manning is not as good as Josh McCown? I’m assuming last year’s form is taken into play here which is likely why McCown is higher than he should be and perhaps Manning lower than he deserves.
I think McCown will suffice for the time being (if it was my choice Mike Glennon would be starting) but to say a player who had one good season, which only came last year, is ranked higher than Manning is insane. I realize Manning was terrible last year, but ask yourself, who would you rather have?
This isn’t a knock on McCown. He’s had a career revival and he’s the guy Lovie Smith handpicked to lead this offense. But to me, 19 is too high.
It’s debatable too that Palmer (lots of picks, I know) and RGIII (injury prone) are behind McCown. Even Bradford (too inconsistent for a No1. Overall pick) and Schaub (the guy that was rumoured to be on his way to TB) could be considered better than McCown. Some of the choices from 20 upwards make sense such as Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jake Locker and EJ Manuel. I think McCown is about four or five spots too high here.
So, Bucs fans, what do you think? Let us know in the pole!
