On Monday, Tony Dungy caused quite a media firestorm when his comments to the Tampa Bay Tribune regarding Michael Sam surfaced. Today, Dungy issued a statement to clarify what was said. However, through it all, you can’t help but wonder what his mentor and current Bucs head coach Lovie Smith thought about those remarks.
Lovie spoke with ESPN Radio earlier today and here’s what he had to say:
“Tony is a man of conviction,” Lovie said. “He says what’s on his mind. So I’m not going to try to critique what Tony said. I’m sure Tony would evaluate all players and he felt like, if taking everything into consideration, if they could help his team win, he would take them on [his] team.
“That’s how we look at it [on the 2014 Buccaneers]. We evaluated all the players. There are pluses and minuses for every football player.”
Smith added that the potential of becoming a distraction is one of the many factors he takes into account when evaluating college prospects.
