If you were watching the Bucs final preseason matchup with the Redskins, you might have caught Jason Licht dish out a few gems with a very candid interview with Ronde Barber.
At the start of the 4th quarter during the Redskins at Buccaneers final preseason game, the great Ronde Barber got a chance to interview Licht. The topic grew immediately from what went into the trade for Logan Mankins and the overall improvement of the offensive line straight into how things played out with the now famous meeting with Richie Incognito. Licht once again reaffirmed his class line, “all players that we think can help us win, we look at”. But when Barber pestered Licht for more, you may have gotten the impression that Incognito talks aren’t exactly over. Barber asked what the meeting was like and his further thoughts on Incognito. Licht spoke highly of the alleged NFL bully and, while I wasn’t able to pull exact quotations, if I had to bet based on the way Licht talked about the meeting I’d put my money on Richie Incognito wearing a Buccaneers uniform in 2014. Licht also mentioned how the move to get Mankins was “getting a head start on what will happen the next couple of days”, referring of course to the impending cut deadline, but perhaps also signing Richie Incognito.
If Richie Incognito joins Logan Mankins, Anthony Collins, and Evan Dietrich-Smith on the offensive line, Licht will have pieced together a talented and very tough line. We could see some of the best protection in Buccaneers history.
More quick notes from Barber and Licht:
Licht: “We’re way ahead of where we thought we’d be at this time”, when asked about his expectations from the team.
Solomon Patton return job “looks promising”.
Barber asked who has the inside track for other guard spot, Licht dodges question.
Licht on the preseason: “Defensively, really, really pleased”, Offense a “work in progress, came together last week”. This upcoming week “will be key in inserting Logan in there”.
Barber asks about surprises during camp. Licht singles out Jorvorskie Lane and Louis Murphy as two guys from the bubble who have impressed.
At the very end of Barber’s interview, after raving about Lane and describing him as a “hammer”, Licht says Lane’s performance and emergence on the team was a big factor in the decision to trade away TE Tim Wright for G Logan Mankins.
