The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are cutting down their rosters to 53 players in preparation to kick off the season next weekend and that means some big names are getting tossed onto the spare parts pile.
One player who has been given his pink slip is speedy return specialist Jeff Demps. According to Tampa Bay Times reporter Greg Auman, the Bucs have released Demps after he failed to make an impression on the Lovie Smith regime in training camp.

This isn’t that surprising of a cut, as Demps really provided no real substance to the roster outside of being really fast. He was a special teamer at best and while the Buccaneers could have used him as a kick returner, if he was really that good at it he would have latched on with the New England Patriots during his tenure there.
There isn’t as much of an emphasis on kick returning as there once was, and while Demps is no doubt in possession of Olympic speed, he’s not cut out for the Bucs roster and doesn’t offer enough to earn a roster spot in 2014.
