Buccaneers’ Most Hated Man: Round Two, Game One

facebooktwitterreddit

Who do Buccaneers’ fans hate the most? There are a great many beloved players throughout their 40 year history, despite limited success. Still others are hated by Bucs Nation. The tournament rolls on.

Over the last forty seasons, the Buccaneers have given their fans a lot of memories that would be better considered as nightmares.  Poor on-field performances, bad coaching, and much more.  There have been some strong performances, even a Super Bowl win.  But there are still a greater number of personalities that Bucs Nation hates to this day.

“Bucs Most Hated Man” continues right now!

In one corner, we have Bo Jackson! Jackson stays in the tournament after beating Michael Johnson in round one. To recap a bit, Jackson spurned the Bucs, over something he assumed to be true. He firmly believed that Hugh Culverhouse lied to him, and it cost him his final season of college eligibility. He said he would never play in Tampa, even if he was selected by the team.

Bo went on to be one of the top two-sport performers ever, and became a star for the Los Angeles Raiders, before a devastating hip injury turned him into half the player he was.

Was he right about Culverhouse?  Possibly.  Would Bo have ever become a star as a member of the Bucs?  It’s hard to say what his career would have turned into, although his talent would lead us to believe that he would have been just fine.

The point is he never really knew for sure of the situation was a deliberate result of Culverhouse.  Potentially, he could have had bad advice before asking Jackson to come or a visit.  He shunned the Bucs based upon his assumptions, and never gave Bucs Nation the chance to see his talents flourish on the Florida stge.

Does Bo know the semifinals of our tournament?

And in this corner, we have Greg Schiano! Schiano is coming off of a win over his general manager at the time, Mark Dominik. Schiano came to the team off of a successful bowl win at Rutgers. However, he led the team backwards, with a 7-9 season in his first year, followed up by a 4-12 finish in 2013 that led to his dismissal.

Not to be outdone was his ability to get players and opposing coaches to dislike him. Remember the “victory formation” fiasco?  One of the low points of Schiano’s tenure, and there were several, was Tom Coughlin confronting him at midfield  after the Bucs’ crashed the Giants’ victory formation.

The players never liked it either, as the word was that some Bucs’ players would let the opponent know it was coming, and apologize for it immediately.  The players didn’t even respect Schiano’s tactics, and he was a bit of a dictator.
