The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not done with the 2013 roster yet, and that was made evident on Sunday when they reportedly agreed to a deal to bring in Gabe Carimi, an offensive lineman who was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round in 2011. The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Carimi is on his way to Tampa to meet with team officials and likely to take a physical. Adam Schefter reports that the compensation for the Bears is a sixth round pick.

And we have a deal: Bears traded OL Gabe Carimi to Tampa Bay for a sixth-round pick in 2014.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) June 10, 2013

Carimi was a highly touted rookie coming out of Wisconsin in 2011, having won the Outland Trophy during his time with the Badgers, awarding him for being the best interior lineman in college football. He would play right tackle and right guard during his time in Chicago, but missed a good chunk of his rookie season thanks to a knee injury. When he returned to the lineup, he was inconsistent in pass blocking, allowing Jay Cutler to hit the turf several times in 2012.

He was also the center of some controversy, as he was planning on training away from the Bears’ organization this offseason, which may have been the spark that set off trade negotiations. His injury history and his falling out with the Bears means he became expendable, and the Buccaneers sought his versatility on the offensive line and were able to work out a deal to acquire him at a very affordable price.

So how does Carimi fit with the Buccaneers? He’s likely to push Demar Dotson for his job at right tackle, or provide depth on the right side of the line behind Davin Joseph and Dotson. Carimi was not fully healthy in 2012, so it’s unfair to deem him a total bust after just one season coming off a major knee injury. But he has a lot to prove, and clearly the Buccaneers believe he’s got some talent waiting to be discovered. In particular, his college offensive line coach, Bob Bostad, will try to reclaim the Gabe Carimi he knew during his time in Madison, and bring out the star offensive lineman he coached at Camp Randall.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have added an explosive playmaker and one of the best pure athletes in the NFL by trading for speedy running back Jeffery Demps. Demps was a member of the New England Patriots, who took LeGarrette Blount as compensation for the former Gator, and sent the Buccaneers a 7th round pick as well.

Demps has Olympic-level speed, and even has a silver medal from the 2012 London Olympics as a member of the United States’ relay team. He averaged 7 yards per touch from scrimmage at the University of Florida, and also averaged almost 30 yards per kick return. He scored 25 career touchdowns at Florida, and was a key member of the dynamic offenses the Gators featured under Urban Meyer.

Here is the tweet confirming the news:

Bucs traded RB LeGarrette Blount to Patriots for RB Jeff Demps and a 7th-round pick, as @tomecurran reported.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 27, 2013

Demps has openly stated that he wants to continue to pursue his track career while playing football, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport stated on air during NFLN’s draft coverage that the Buccaneers are willing to allow Demps to compete in track events while under contract with the Buccaneers.

This trade also gives the Buccaneers a seventh round pick, adding another pick to add potential depth heading into next season.

The trade does signal the end of the LeGarrette Blount era in Tampa Bay. Blount was brought in despite his checkered past, and quickly found himself with the weight of a struggling offense on his shoulders. He played fairly well, putting up decent yardage and outperforming his undrafted status. But under Greg Schiano, Blount dropped down the depth chart, as his starting position was overtaken by Doug Martin, and Blount lacked the skills to specialize as a third down back or short yardage back.

It was a foregone conclusion that the Buccaneers would move on from Blount, and I believe this is the best kind of deal for the Bucs. Demps is a dynamic athlete who can add a lot to the special teams, and an extra draft pick brings cost-controlled depth for the team to build upon.

If you haven’t heard this news yet, please sit down and prepare to be shocked:

Darrelle Revis received a 6-yr deal from the Bucs that makes him highest paid DB in NFL history but includes NO guaranteed money. None.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 21, 2013

No. Guaranteed. Money. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made another brilliant business move, signing Revis to a very lucrative deal for the cornerback, and incredibly safe for the Buccaneers, allowing them to let him go at any time during the contract. This provides the ultimate injury protection, as there is no salary cap penalty for letting Darrelle Revis go if he fails to live up to his historic contract.

Darrelle signed six-year, $96 million deal with Bucs. This year he will make $16 million. Makes $16 million each year. Ripped up old deal.

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 21, 2013

So the money involved is absolutely historic, paying Revis more than almost every player in the NFL besides elite quarterbacks. That shows how important Revis is to a defense, and how big of an impact he can have. So what did the Buccaneers give up to get Revis?

Trade official: Darrelle Revis passed physical. Bucs send 1st in 2013 and conditional 4th in 2014 that could be 3rd to Jets. More on ESPNews

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 21, 2013

This is also a brilliant piece of business, as the Buccaneers have traded only the 13th overall selection and a conditional 2014 selection, keeping the remaining 2013 picks in-house to build depth for this important 2013 season with Josh Freeman entering a contract year.

Today has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that Mark Dominik is settling into his role and putting his trademark on this franchise. These two bits of news show a bold approach to handling a huge trade situation and contract situation. My hat goes off the the Buccaneers’ front office, because this is the best possible result of this trade. Revis has incentive to play hard and earn his paycheck, and the draft picks surrendered are less than most media outlets were reporting.

And just in case you were wanting official news from the team, you have it here:

Yes! It’s officially a done deal: Darrelle Revis is a Buccaneer! Bucs trade 2013 1st-rounder and conditional 2014 4th or 3rd to Jets.

— Tampa Bay Buccaneers (@TBBuccaneers) April 21, 2013

It’s official, folks, Darrelle Revis is a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. The All-Pro cornerback has found a new home in Tampa Bay, and there is real reason to be excited.
