Today at 4 PM marks the start of free agency, the point where the NFL off-season switches from speculative to active as teams begin addressing their needs. The Bucs have no shortage of needs, but also no shortage of cap space, which should make for an interesting couple of weeks.

Feb 5, 2012; Indianapolis, IN, USA; A general view of the NFL logo at mid-field prior to the start of Super Bowl XLVI between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Over the past months a lot has been made about where the Buccaneers would be spenders this season or if they would wait until the mandatory salary cap floor kicks in during next off-season. The fan-base seems to be even split on the topic, with half buying into the lip-service of the owners during the coaching search while the other half is apprehensive given the team’s track record in the past.

Today at 4, the Bucs will have a chance to put their money where their mouth is.

We’ll have all hands on deck all day long and well into tomorrow as we get into the start of free agency. Josh has been working double-duty while we ease a few new writers in and I travel for work, but today we will be full-staffed and churning out articles and a heck of a clip.

So stay tuned and we’ll be serving up news, rumors and commentary all day long.

Perhaps you’ve noticed things have been changing around here with a new look, steady stream of content and plenty of other surprises on the way. We’re looking to hire a few more capable writers here at the Pewter Plank too. It doesn’t matter where you live or what you studied in school, all that matters is that you’re knowledgeable and can write.

If you’re interested in coming aboard. Click here to fill out the FanSided application and someone will contact you within 48 hours.

We do not pay our staff, but you get the opportunity to get your writing and name in front of thousands of readers, as well as chances to be published on sites like NFL.com. Many of our staff at FanSided, myself included, have gone on to professional careers in sports journalism largely due in part to the experience and practical education they gain as writers here.

We are currently looking to fill the following rolls:

Draft Expert- A writer who will spend the year scouting collegiate talent, compiling positional rankings and working with the editor and other writers on our big board and mock drafts.

Social Media Manager- A staff member who in addition to contributing writing, will track relevant Buccaneers information across social media sites and run our Facebook page.

Staff Writers- Writers to cover a range of topics from news posts to game breakdowns. All writers will be asked to ascribe to the FanSided rules of procedure and adhere to all site rules.

It's time to start talking about the draft.

We don’t really get deep into our draft cycle until the Combine in late February. That’s about the point when you can really start to formulate an idea on players, the Senior Bowl and the Shrine Game are over, the Combine kicks off several weeks of pro days and two months later it all culminates in the draft.

As I mentioned yesterday, if you’re interested in checking out what kind of coverage you can expect click the “Big Board” tab up above or take a look at last year’s draft capsule.

This year you can expect even more. We’re still doing our big board, our top 100, our mocks, our positional rankings and our team needs but we’re expanding the coverage in every way and even adding a few features. Starting today we’ll begin posting our lead-up draft coverage. Pre-pre-draft coverage if you will. I’m talking preliminary rankings, player profiles and mock draft picks from around the internet.

I will just say this, keep your eyes peeled for player features. We are going to try to avoid inundating you with every single player profile we can write. Rather when we profile a guy it’s because we think he would make a fantastic fit in Tampa. Not everyone will get a write-up, sometimes we’ll skip the obvious top players at a position for a guy the Bucs could realistically take in a middle or late round. So when you see a player profile go up, pay attention.

Regardless, we’re working hard on this coverage, so stay tuned and go Bucs!
