After trading out of the second round to get back into the first again yesterday, the Bucs sent their third and fourth round picks to the Houston Texans to get back into the second round and take Nebraska OLB Lavonte David.

Sept 3, 2011; Lincoln, NE, USA; Nebraska Cornhuskers linebacker Lavonte David (4) celebrates after Nebraska intercepted a Chattanooga Mocs pass during the second half at Memorial Stadium.
David is a bit undersized, but I even said in the scouting process that he has Greg Schiano written all over him. David is instinctive and smart and plays with great athleticism, in spite of not having ideal size. He’s a very good value at this spot in the second round and represents another starter picked up in the first two rounds of the draft.

Here’s what we wrote on our big board, we’ll have more coming soon:

4.) Lavonte David, Nebraska, Sr.

Depending on how the first round goes, Lavonte David might be a good option for the Bucs on day two. He may be a reach for Tampa in round two, but he would be an outright steal in the third. The knock on David is his size, at just 6-foot a lot of NFL scouts have questioned whether he wouldn’t be better off as a safety. He wouldn’t be. Unlike Brown, David is extremely instinctual and more often than not can be found with his helmet on the ball. He is undersized, no doubt about it, but with a good defensive line in front of him to keep the blockers off, he would be an instant upgrade at the Will linebacker position. He also has the athleticism and cover skills to stay on the field in nickel sets. If he were just a couple inches taller you’d likely see Lavonte David crawl up into the back half of the first round, unfortunately he’s not. But what Lavonte David is though, is a blue-collar guy with a very high work ethic that hails from a good program and played major college football at a high level over the past few years. Trust me, if the Buccaneers draft Lavonte David you will not be dissapointed. And of all these guys, he smacks of a Schiano-type the most.

Fair play to Mark Dominik who recoup the fourth round pick he lost in last year’s Luke Stocker deal and thenc select the player the Bucs coveted all along (according Adam Schefter), Mark Barron. The Cowboys swooped in the pick before them, sending picks to the Rams in exchange for Morris Claiborne at six. The Bucs didn’t mind and pick the intelligent safety from Bama.

January 6, 2012; New Orleans, LA, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back Mark Barron (4) talks during media day for the 2012 BCS National Championship game to be played on January 9, 2012 against the LSU Tigers at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
At least that what they’ll want us to think. But it didn’t look good when the clock almost ran out. We’ll have more soon…

We’ll never know. At any rate here’s what we wrote on Barron:

1.) Mark Barron (SS), Alabama, SR.

Mark Barron is the lone safety that I would give a first round grade to in this draft. Even with a surgery to repair a double hernia, and at just 80-90% at his pro day, Barron still looked the part of a first rounder. The most attractive aspect of the Tide safety is actually not his athleticism or play, it’s his football IQ. Barron was the de facto quarterback of the best defense in the country last season. He made the adjustments and lead the unit, all the way to a national title as a matter of fact. Nick Saban is renowned for his ability to coach defenses, specifically defensive backs. Barron, along with Dre Kirkpatrick, are just two more in a long line of Saban first round DB’s. Barron likely would have jumped into the draft last year if not for a pectoral injury. On the field, he is a ball hawk, though he’s more of a zone player where his instincts and intelligence put him in consistently good position to make plays on the football. He is a little stiff in man coverage, but aside from that his only other flaw is his over-aggressiveness (he tends of over-pursue). That can all be reined in though, Barron will likely become a very good NFL safety.

The Cleveland Browns moved up one spot, from 4th overall to 3rd, likely to ensure they could select Alabama RB Trent Richardson. The move will cost the Browns a 4, 5 and 7, but effectively locks the Bucs out of the Richardson sweepstakes by insuring they can’t come up to three and take the former Crimson Tide runner.

The draft now starts at four, and Tampa’s nightmare scenario could be coming true, if the Vikings want to go corner, both of the Bucs favored prospects will be off the board and Tampa will have to go to the next tier of the their draft evaluations.

As we said last night, if that happens the Bucs have plenty of options.

The new CBA and the rookie cap have clearly changed what it takes to move in the first round. We’ll have more as it develops…
