Well, add another Buccaneer to the list of troublemakers from this past off-season. Joining the ranks of other Bucs who have run afoul of the law, defensive end Alex Magee was arrested on Monday for possession and driving with an expired tag. According to Bay News Nine:

Magee’s full name – Arcilla Alexander Magee – was driving his 2009 Dodge Charger when he was stopped on East Kennedy Blvd. and North Nebraska Ave. at 1:13pm, the report says. The officer smelled marijuana and searched the vehicle. The investigation turned up a “misdemeanor amount of field test positive marijuana”, according to the report.

Magee was originally a member of the Kansas City Chiefs before being traded to Tampa last season. He played mostly as a reserve last season for the Bucs, notching two sacks and forced fumble. The bottom line is that Alex Magee can probably expect to be made an example of when NFL business resumes. The sad truth is that even without a history of these issues, he’s a marginal player who the Bucs could do without and much like they did with Jerramy Stevens last year, he will probably be the sacrifice made to get league pundits to stop with the “Raheem Morris is an enabler” business.

Magee has some promise, but having been relegated to back-up duty on what was already a downright terrible defensive line last season, I can’t see the Bucs sticking with him much longer. I never like to see a player get cut or hurt his career prospects, but it’s looking that way for Magee.

I went to FSU with Geno Hayes. That’s not to say I knew the guy, at a school of 40,000, you really don’t know many people. But he was definitely entrenched in the minds of Seminole students and fans. Whether he was guaranteeing victory over Tim Tebow and the Gators (didn’t end well) or (allegedly) punching police officers at Chubby’s, he was tough not to hear about.

In college Hayes was involved at an unfortunate incident at a bar which ended in him being tazed and arrested and a teammate being dismissed. At the time rumor circulated the campus that it had been Hayes who had thrown the punch, but ultimately teammate Joe Surratt was the one credited with that indiscretion. Regardless, you could imagine my reaction last December, when once again Hayes was tazed and arrested, this time at the Blue Martini in Tampa. Are you seeing a pattern here?

Well, Hayes has gotten off again with little more than a slap on the wrist. In college Hayes got off without much issue after causing an incident at a bar. He clearly didn’t learn because he did the exact same thing again in Tampa last year. And once again, he’s not going to get into any trouble and I doubt this will be the last incident from Hayes.

The court will withhold adjudication on the trespassing charge. Hayes will not be required to perform community service or serve any other sentence, not uncommon in similar cases. Hayes will only be required to pay $265 in court costs.

I’m not saying I want Hayes to be in trouble or that he’s a bad guy. He’s a great player and he’s a ‘Nole. I actually really like Geno. But it’s time to grow up. Roger Goodell should probably have something to say in the way of a fine, regardless of the non-adjudication. But Geno Hayes needs to realize he’s a target. I’m sure he just drinks a bit and then reacts poorly when someone gets in his face (as many males do), but that just can’t happen again. Once is an exception, twice is a trend. Hayes can’t afford another one of these incidents. Unfortunately, until someone really holds him accountable though, this will probably continue. Which is a shame, because the Bucs need to be able to rely on Hayes in the future.

Raheem Morris really can’t be enjoying life in the NFL all that much this week. Already, the lockout has put his young Buccaneers team in a precarious situation. Whereas other, more veteran teams can handle a lack of off-season work this Bucs squad can use every rep, every film session and every minute in the team facilities it can get. Now Morris has to go make the media rounds and discuss the character of his team. A topic that was already a sore subject last year when the Bucs were regularly painted as a team full of character-cases and Morris was credited with a lack of team discipline.

Per ESPN’s Pat Yasinkas, Raheem Morris offered a little bit more insight into the recent troubles of Aqib Talib and the Bucs approach towards character evaluation in general:

“Everybody in our league has issues,’’ Morris said. “For us, it’s about who we bring in and how we can control those guys. We look for captains (on college teams), guys with high upstanding quality. Every once in a while, you get a guy who’s not kind of the upstanding kind of guy that you want, and his talent surpasses some of the things that you may settle for. And you’ve got to figure out when you can take him, when you cannot take him and the calculated risk you take as an organization.

“Myself and (general manager) Mark Dominik hold ourselves accountable for helping those young men come along. But we can’t raise them. We can only pick them, get them in the building. You’ve got to be harsh. Unfortunately, Jerramy Stevens is not on our football team anymore. Unfortunately, Tanard Jackson had to sit out a whole year. I’m never going to be a coach who disciplines publicly. We do almost everything in-house.’’
