Per Rick Stroud and Pewter Report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wide receiver Raymond Webber has been lost for the season. Webber was a rookie from Arkansas Pine-Bluff who Mark Dominik mentioned in high esteem when asked about his undrafted free agent signings. The 6’3 220 lb receiver suffered a hamstring injury on Monday and had to be carted off the field.

Though the news was initially that he has a severely strained hamstring, according to Webber himself he has three torn tendons. Webber tweeted earlier:

“I’m alright, wish I could play this year but I’m still a part of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, its light at the end of the tunnel.”

“Doctor said he’s amazed I was able to walk and still function my leg from how the x-ray looks.”

The comment about still being part of the Bucs seems to indicate Tampa might put him on their IR as opposed to just reaching an injury settlement and letting him go. There’s no telling whether Webber would have made the team or had an impact this season, but he was a highly productive college receiver and if there’s any receiver where small-school players can come in the NFL and find success, it’s receiver. Regardless, it’s a shame for the young man. Here’s hoping he has a good swift recovery and comes back strong next season.

NFL.com’s Steve Wyche has recently posted a feature on the Bucs second-year DT Brian Price. The bulk of the story is that Price, who is excited about next year, still isn’t running yet. He’s being very cautious during his recovery, especially during the lockout, but he’s still not ready to go yet. What’s more disturbing, and this has been mentioned several places, is that the Bucs misdiagnosed Price last year. Initially he was though to have a hamstring issue before it was discovered that he had sustained pelvic fractures back in the summer (this was discovered in week five).

While the Bucs medical staff has done a stupendous job with rehabbing the oft-injured Cadillac Williams and Kellen Winslow, this doesn’t exactly inspire much confidence on their pre-draft prognosis of Da’Quan Bowers either. They got Brian Price’s injury wrong and the had about four months with him. They had far less time with Bowers. Click the link below to check out the feature, it’s worth the read.

Quick, name the Bucs’ long-snapper… If you said Andrew Economos you’re right, but I’d guess more than a few Bucs fans would be hard-pressed to name him. That’s actually the sign of a solid long-snapper, you really shouldn’t notice him, any headline about Economos is typically a bad one. Thus is the life of an NFL long-snapper. That’s why it’s not good for Economos to be in the news right now, fortunately he didn’t get into any trouble, but he did tear his Achilles tendon somehow this off-season and that may prevent the 28 year-old from playing in his sixth NFL season.

The Bucs signed Economos to five year, 4-million dollar extension in 2008, Mark Dominik revealed the injury at his press conference on Thursday. The Bucs aren’t allowed to have contact with their players until the lockout is lifted, so they will have no idea as to Economos’ status until NFL business resumes.

What’s more disconcerting is the effect this could have on the unofficial workouts currently being organized by Josh Freeman in Tampa. Suffice it to say Economos is hardly insured of having a job when the lockout stops, he may not even be insured at all. That means right now Economos is on his own rehabbing an injury and the Bucs will likely cast him aside when the season starts. The other Bucs players are at least somewhat aware of that reality, and if you’re marginal or young, what incentive do you now have to go push yourself in the off-season and risk injury?

Jeff Faine noted that Josh Freeman would have challenges organizing practices during a lockout, this ties into that. Getting injured right now could be detrimental to a player’s career, the NFLPA continues to preach that the players need to protect themselves. Protecting yourself in Tampa may mean not risking injury now.
