Gerald McCoy is done for the season, some are upset about that, others aren’t. While it’s undeniable McCoy brings a solid presence to the middle of the Buccaneers defensive line, the hype versus the return on the second year DT haven’t necessarily matched up. I like McCoy, but I do think he’s amongst the most overrated players on the Buccaneers roster. His loss hurts, but it’s not going to bury this team.

Today the Buccaneers signed former Bills first-rounder John McCargo, once a stand-out at NC State. McCargo was in camp with the Bucs in the preseason, he is 6’2 and 307 and actually reminds me a little bit of McCoy. McCargo has never really translated to the NFL, but has some raw ability and the size to make an impact if he can ever put things together.

After trading up for McCargo in 2006, the Bills traded him to the Colts where he continued to struggle to crack the starting line-up. The Bucs hope a change of scenery and coaching philosophies will help McCargo succeed in Tampa, but he’s likely to be little more than depth for the Buccaneers moving forward.

I do think, believe it or not, the Bucs may need to grab another DT in free agency or the draft next year. Gerald McCoy has yet to produce (though I do still believe he will emerge as a great player) and has struggled with injuries and Brian Price’s health is always a question mark.
