Bucs Screw The Pooch Again, No Jay Cutler

For what seems like the upteen-billionth time in the last two years, the Bucs have failed to capitalize on a move to significantly change the course of the franchise. It was long rumored that the Bucs were interested in Jay Cutler, just as they were in Brett Favre, and Jonathan Vilma, and Albert Haynesworth and so on and so forth.

For the people out there who think that the Bears overpaid, I’m sorry, you’re just incorrect on this one. It happens, let’s see, never, that a franchise QB is available via trade going into his 4th season in the league, coming off of a 4500 yard Pro Bowl season. The last Pro Bowl caliber QB available was Drew Brees, and he was a FA and many teams missed the boat on that one as well. If you are so willing to invest a 1st round pick in a QB anyway, one who you aren’t sure whether or not will turn out like Ryan Leaf or Heath Shuler, you wouldn’t give up another 1st round pick to get a player who has the skill set of a Jay Cutler?

I’m rarely so adamant about a particular point, but the fact that 53% of the nation (ESPN poll) this morning thought that the Broncos got the better deal is just ludicrous to me.

Kudos to Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith, and a big AHA to Josh McDaniels for screwing the pooch even moreso than the Bucs for not capitalizing on McDaniels arrogance.

Jay Cutler Officially On The Trade Block

Pat Bowlen - “Numerous attempts to contact Jay Cutler in the last 10 days, both by [coach] Josh McDaniels and myself, have been unsuccessful.

“A conversation with his agent earlier today clearly communicated and confirmed to us that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos.

“We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded.”

After a month of speculation it appears that Josh McDaniels’ failed attempt to land QB Matt Cassel has led to irreconciable differences between Jay Cutler and McDaniels. It seemed at first as though the Broncos were intent on resolving the situation, because why would you want to move a Pro Bowl QB not even in his prime, but that is out the window right now.

I still have high hopes of the Bucs potentially landing Cutler, but in all actuality, if the Lions want him, they have much more ammo to get him. They could offer a similar offer to us, a 1st and a 3rd, but the difference being they could offer their own 3rd round pick which is 18 spots higher than our pick. They could even just send the entire package they received for Roy Williams to the Lions, 1st, 3rd and a 5th.

The next couple weeks should be interesting in regards to the Buccaneer QB situation.
