I’ve had no qualms for expressing my lack of confidence in 4th year SS Sabby Piscitelli. I’ve seen a lot of football games both in person and at Raymond James Stadium (as well as a few away stadiums) and he makes some of the most boneheaded decisions I’ve ever seen for a player in the secondary. We drafted him with the thought that he was going to come in and be the next John Lynch, but quite frankly he is nowhere near that. Sabby has the ability to occasionally make a splash play on defense on an underthrown ball (4 careeer INT’s in 34 games) but he is no ballhawk. His footwork and ability to recover speedwise against fast receivers is awful at best. The one place we thought he could be dominant was tackling, but one of the main images that has continued to last in my mind throughout the whole offseason, a play that sums up the Bucs entire year, was a play where Sabby tried to make a tackle and kind of jumped on the offensive players back, riding him around like a little kid riding on his dads’ back, and he still failed to make the tackle. The last article that was written by Kyle was commented on my FB page, and the user commenter said that if Sabby starts at SS, the Bucs are in trouble, and I couldn’t agree more.

I was in favor of the Bucs looking to add SS Sean Jones to the team before the 2009 season, when the Philadelphia Eagles snapped him up during FA. I always thought he was an underrated ball hawk, as evidenced by his 16 picks in the last 4 years. My one question with Jones boils down to the fact that the Eagles felt the need to replace him. This was a guy they had high hopes of taking over for Brian Dawkins. They signed him, and he didn’t even start every game for them at one of their weakest positions. That’s never good when a team lets a guy walk that they signed at a position of desperate need.

I hope Sean Jones wins the starting job, but I would be careful not to expect too much from a guy who just came off of a very lackluster season for a team that needed his skills at a position of need.
