Round 2, Pick 39: Chase Winovich, EDGE, Michigan

With the 39th overall pick in the draft, the Buccaneers give Barrett a bookend to help with the horrid Tampa Bay pass rush from a year ago by selecting Chase Winovich of the University of Michigan. Winovich has been a riser as of late, and while many believe the end of the first round is too early to snatch him up, the Buccaneers may be able to get him at the beginning of the second round.

Winovich was pegged as a technician who used his skills to compensate for his lack of athleticism. However, he went to the combine last month and shocked everybody, testing nearly as well as his college teammate Rashan Gary. As a result, Winovich has the attention of NFL scouts and general managers and is unlikely to make it out of the top-40.

The long haired Wolverine ran a blazing 4.59 second 40 yard dash and an impressive 6.94 second 3-cone drill, ranking him in the 94th and 90th percentile respectively; he also tested into the 95th percentile in the 20 yard shuttle as well with a 4.11 second time. He is a bit undersized at nearly 6’3 and 256 pounds and rather short arms, but his use of his hands and technique should be able to compensate for that.

Adding Winovich would give the Buccaneers a formidable rotation of the edge, allowing Noah Spence and Carl Nassib to rotate in to give him and Barrett a breather when needed to keep all four fresh. The Buccaneers revamp their pass rushers by first adding Barrett, and now Winovich with their second round pick.
