The Buccaneers could still use a proven option at strong safety.

Of all the positions on the Buccaneer roster, the one that is the biggest question mark right now is at strong safety. The Bucs currently have Jordan Whitehead and Mike Edwards, who have both shown some upside, but it is hard to compete with Jamal Adams.

A similar situation was seen with Jameis Winston. Jameis had his flashes and moments that showed the potential to be a franchise player, but the Bucs decided to go with the more proven option in Tom Brady. This wasn’t a slight against Jameis; it was merely the belief that the franchise has a better chance of winning a Super Bowl with Brady.

In the same way that Tampa Bay saw Brady as the best option to win a Super Bowl, Jamal Adams should be seen in the same light. It is impossible to argue by any metric, stat, or eye test, that Jamal Adams wouldn’t help the defense improve dramatically in the secondary.

With Antoine Winfield Jr. the likely option to start at free safety in week one, the Bucs will need a player of Adams’ caliber to step in as a complimentary strong safety. Some fans have been quick to rule out this trade as the Bucs just drafted Winfield, but the roles they play on defense couldn’t be more different.
