Taking a wide receiver with the No. 19 pick in the NFL Draft wasn't what the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were expected to do, but it ended up kicking off a fantastic class for Jason Licht.
It was a party that didn't stop after the team added potential impact players in Benjamin Morrison, Jacob Parrish, and Tez Johnson. The Bucs did what they've done the last two years and pieced together an impressive undrafted free agent haul, one that included Desmond Watson and Shilo Sanders.
Now comes the part of the offseason where rosters are trimmed to make room for the incoming class of rookies. That's what the Buccaneers did in the fallout of the NFL Draft, releasing four players including wide receiver Marquez Callaway.
Cornerback Dallis Flowers, outside linebacker Daniel Grzesiak and wide receiver Tanner Knue were also waived, the team announced on Tuesday.
Buccaneers make first round of post-NFL Draft roster cuts
These aren't the most significant roster cuts in the world, but they are notable. Tampa Bay doubled up on wide receivers in the draft, taking both Emeka Egbuka and Tez Johnson while adding Will Sheppard and Garrett Greene as UDFAs.
By releasing Callaway and Knue, the Bucs are getting a head start on what could be the most difficult position to cut down during camp. Right now there are four spots already locked up: Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Jalen McMillan, and Egbuka.
Last year the Bucs only carried five receivers out of training camp on the 53-man roster; Trey Palmer, Sterling Shepard, and Kam Johnson are all going to be battling for what could be that final roster spot. Lest we forget Tez Johnson, who does a lot of what Kam Johnson does, is in the mix as well.
It's a crowded room, even with Callaway and Knue gone, and this move is an indication that the purge is only getting started rather than being a one-off thing.
