Our reaction:

The Buccaneers got the player they wanted all along, now it’s time to get down to business. General manager Jason Licht has made it clear that he wants Winston to be the team’s starting quarterback when they face the Tennessee Titans in Week 1. But, in order to turn that dream into a reality, there is a lot of work that needs to be done.

For starters (no pun intended), Jameis needs to understand offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter’s playbook, execute the offense to Koetter’s expectations and prove that what he showed at the Seminoles’ Pro Day and in his two years at Florida State is no fluke. It’s a lot of demand of a quarterback, but so far, Winston is showing that he can handle the pressure. “I told my wife, Blair, ‘I gave him an A,”’ Licht told USA Today’s Jim Corbett. “I thought it was a great day. He knew the offense already. He wasn’t overwhelmed.”

“[Jameis Winston] is getting better,” Lovie said, according to Bucs Nation. “As you talk about that starting spot, there’s a lot to learn for all of the rookies, but for the quarterback, that’s a big playbook. He’s cramming like it’s the final exam right now and doing a good job. We’ve seen marked improvement from the moment we gave him his playbook. Jameis is a bright guy. He’ll be able to get it all.”

Rookie camp may come off as a lighthearted affair, but it’s important to see that Winston is able to excel at his first test with the Buccaneers. Even though there were some nerves regarding whether or not Jameis would be able to quickly adapt to life in the NFL, he appears to be up to the task. Now, let’s keep the momentum going.
