player. 13.
If the Chargers are going to make a splash before Philip Rivers retires, it’s going to have to come soon. It’s also going to have to come without veteran captain Eric Weddle.

Weddle and the Chargers had a dramatic falling out last season, including the team fining him for watching his daughter perform during halftime of a game.

While the team may have been justified by rules or policies, the fine felt personal, and Weddle’s reaction was very personal. Due to this, the Chargers will not have their safety net, and will need to draft one unless they believe they can bring Eric Berry to the west coast.

Other than Berry, there are no upgrades to Weddle, but there may be one in the draft. Jalen Ramsey from Florida State is a versatile, physical, and athletically gifted defensive back who can allow the Chargers to absorb the loss of Weddle and possibly even come out of it better.

Ramsey’s skills as a return man is also an area of need for the Chargers who haven’t had a kickoff or punt return for a touchdown since 2012.

Bottom line for San Diego is you can’t get better if you don’t at least stay as good as you were before. Adding Ramsey would keep them just as good, if not better, in the secondary and allow them to look for more improvements later in the draft.

Previously: Jalen Ramsey – FS – Florida State
.
