42. . CB. Florida. Vernon Hargreaves III. 7. player

If the 49ers have any interest at all in repairing their relationship with embattled quarterback Colin Kaepernick then they’re going to have to build the team up around him instead of drafting to replace him.

Vernon Hargreaves III from Florida is the draft’s best cornerback behind Jalen Ramsey and is the only player who makes sense for San Francisco at 7th overall given who is left on the board.

The San Francisco secondary will become instantly improved by selecting Hargreaves III and he’ll get an immediate opportunity to become the teams primary “cover man”, going against receivers like Tavon Austin, Doug Baldwin, and Larry Fitzgerald.

While there are concerns about his height going against NFL receivers, VH3 relies on toughness, technique, and a leaping ability which allows him to compete for the ball at its highest point in spite of his disadvantage.

The last top-10 defensive back drafted by the 49ers was the great Ronnie Lott.  If the team could get another all-time great here, the team could be on their way back to the top.

Previously:  Ronnie Stanley – OT – Notre Dame
