Coaching

For the first time since the days of Jon Gruden, Tampa Bay has an offensive-minded head coach. When Dirk Koetter was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach after the firing of Lovie Smith, fans seemed to welcome a new perspective and philosophy.

Koetter has never been a head coach in the NFL, so success isn’t guaranteed, but after years of watching defensive-centered head coaches field sub-par defenses, it’s a nice feeling to see Tampa Bay focused on the offense.  That’s not to say that defense isn’t important, and with Koetter being able to hire Mike Smith as his defensive coordinator, the Bucs are in a great spot on both sides of the ball.

Too many times in recent years Tampa Bay has lost games because of offensive ineptitude and defensive breakdowns late in the game.  The Bucs benefit from the stability as Koetter, having worked with the offense in 2015 and helping it improve considerably, will continue to oversee the development of young players like Jameis Winston and Mike Evans.

Smith takes over a defense that has been wildly inconsistent in recent years.  Defenses under Raheem Morris, Greg Schiano and Lovie Smith all struggled while the offense simultaneously sputtered.  With Koetter and Smith, Tampa Bay may have something big that will allow for both sides of the ball to excel for years to come.
