NFL Kicking is Not So Easy

Now here is a guy getting lots of attention, huh?

If you are a kicker, and a team drafted you in the second round, there are going to be large expectations.  The expectations on Roberto Aguayo were to be expected, but were also probably unfair.  We all know the story of his college career by now.  He never missed an extra point in college, nor did he ever miss a field goal from under 40 yards.  That fact excited Bucs’ fans as they dreamed of last second wins.

Well, kicking under the bright lights of the NFL, even in the preseason, is nothing like college.  Roberto is feeling the pressure, with missed extra points and field goals so far in the preseason, culminating with fans booing him off of the field at training camp.  That is not to say it’s surprising, football fans expect a lot, especially from high draft picks.  If the guy had been an undrafted free agent it might not be so harsh for him.

Aguayo will get it right, the ability to kick doesn’t just go away in a few weeks.  But clearly, the job isn’t as easy as it looks.
