The Verdict – Pierre Garcon

The Buccaneers have a tough call to make here. As my friend Chris Partlow from the Wire once said, “this sounds like one of those good problems”. Two play-making receivers that get the job done in very different ways, both clearly able to help the Buccaneers out in their own fashion.

DeSean Jackson and his Olympic speed are a tempting match. He can create space for other players to operate in and would discourage defenses from devoting all their attention towards Mike Evans. With Jackson, every play has home run potential.

Still, for my taste, I’m going with Garcon as the player Tampa should pursue. “How many ways can you help me” is always the question I ask, and as a receiver Garcon has more to offer Jameis Winston than DeSean Jackson does. While he’s not the ideal fit stylistically that Jackson is, Garcon can be a safe, prototypical second receiver that runs multiple routes and consistently doesn’t drop the football. He has more than adequate speed and is a true weapon with the ball in his hands. While both players would have large impacts on the offense, I believe Garcon would have those impacts more often than Jackson.
