In the Pewter Plank’s fan choice for Play of the Year, Jameis Winston comes away victorious in what some view as an upset.
When you have a fan base choose their top play of the year as we did among Buccaneers fans via social media, you can pretty much guess how things are going to go. As a staff, we all assumed is would come down to Jameis Winston versus Mike Evans. They each had plays that will stick out in fans’ memories and be played on countless highlight reels for years to come.
That being said, not many of us predicted the true outcome.
In what ended up being a landslide victory, Jameis Winston’s magical scramble and escape against the Chicago Bears defeated Mike Evans’ one handed catch against the Falcons. The most surprising part was that the Evans catch won Play of the Year at the NFL Honors ceremony, deeming it the best in all of football.
So why didn’t it win this one?
Quite simply because he was going up against Winston and it was being voted upon by a fan base that flocks to the quarterback. Having never had a true franchise quarterback, Bucs fans are far more excited about that position now than just about any other team – ever.
When Winston is involved he will always have the upper hand when it comes down to fan’s choice, simple as that. Despite the incredible athletic feat accomplished by Evans, Winston’s scramble was every bit as impressive and the fans wanted it to be recognized.
There was no wrong answer, of course. Both plays were deserving of recognition and now both have been. As Buccaneers fans, we can all be excited that we’re on the verge of witnessing amazing plays like these on an annual basis with the dynamic duo at the helm.
Jameis Winston is every bit as good as Bucs fans were hoping for and it’s the never say die attitude he has that made this play a reality. Our sincerest congratulations to the 2016 Pewter Plank Fan’s Choice Award winner for Buccaneers Play Of The Year: Jameis Winston.
