With the second overall selection in the 2017 NFL draft the San Francisco 49ers select Solomon Thomas, defensive end out of Stanford. The pick here for the 49ers is simple, bulking up the trenches with a great overall player. Thomas is the second best player on my board, and he goes to a team that is looking to build back to greatness. The Thomas pick not only solidifies a team grooming a great crop of young defensive line talents, but also helps this team in the long run to his high ceiling.

Much can be argued on behalf of a quarterback due to the current situation in the Bay area, but John Lynch and company make a wise decision to stay clear. All of their best quarterbacks in this draft class will need a season to groom, so look for the 49ers to target another signal caller in the later rounds. Taking a quarterback at number two means starting immediately and none of the current crop are ready to do that.

The 49ers must select an impact player in the number two position. Projects come later in the draft. Thomas has the ability to help this team both now and in the future. He’s the guy at number two.
