Did Scott Smith overvalue the safety position when ranking 11 Buccaneers position groups by depth?

During the year long orbit of the NFL season, the month of July at One Buc Place can be compared to being on the dark side of the moon. A virtual communications blackout that every year makes the Buccaneers media get creative to keep the fans reading and clicking.

A great way to keep interest is the list piece. Who are the ten Buccaneers the team would protect during an expansion draft? Who are the greatest Bucs of all-time? Which NFC South club has the best wide receiving corps? Etc.

Recently, long time Buccaneer senior writer/editor Scott Smith penned his own list. Smith broke down the Bucs roster into eleven position groups and ranked them according to depth. As always, I thought it was a informative and well thought out piece. Until he ranked the Bucs safety group, which he placed third.

Although I understand Scott Smith’s thinking for putting the Bucs safeties so high, I just believe it’s flawed. Yes, the top four safeties can win a starting job in training camp, but that does not automatically translate into good depth.
