Buccaneers: Five players in danger of missing the final 53-man roster
By Bailey Adams
No. 1: Luke Stocker
For six seasons, tight end Luke Stocker has been an underrated part of the Buccaneers’ roster. Since he doesn’t make any flashy catches or score a lot of touchdowns, no one seems to notice the presence he has on the offense. Last year, Stocker was the best blocking tight end on the team. Even with the emergence of Cameron Brate as a reliable pass-catcher, Stocker still saw the field often because of his blocking ability. Unfortunately for him, his days in Tampa may be numbered.
When the Bucs drafted O.J. Howard in April, Stocker lost some of his value. Howard’s blocking ability is highly-touted and he can be a big-time target for Jameis Winston. Realistically, No. 88 could stay on for this year as the third tight end. But if the coaching staff is liking what they’re seeing from Tevin Westbrook, Alan Cross or Antony Auclair, Stocker will be the odd man out. If it comes down to a toss-up, the veteran will likely be the one to go. Youth means a lot in the NFL, so the potential of the three 24-year-olds could be enough for the Bucs to say goodbye to the 29-year-old.
This is all pure speculation, of course, considering Stocker is still getting significant snaps. Against Jacksonville, he had the third-most snaps of all tight ends in the first half. He trailed only Brate and Howard, so there’s a legitimate case to be made for the vet to stay on as the No. 3 guy this year. Even still, Stocker could certainly be playing for his job the next two weeks as the younger guys at his position look to unseat him before final cuts roll around.
