If I could give any person in the Buccaneers organization a New Year’s resolution, it would be quarterback Jameis Winston.

The face of the Buccaneers’ franchise has been playing terrific football in the games since his return from a shoulder injury, but my suggested resolution for Winston doesn’t have to do with his on-field play.

Instead, I would ask Winston to resolve to better aiming his intense passion for football. Winston’s fiery nature has been a famous (or infamous depending on who you ask) aspect of his game since his early days at Florida State when he could be seen battling with head coach Jimbo Fisher on the sidelines, or firing his teammates up with impassioned speeches.

In the NFL, Winston’s intensity has been hit and miss; he was lauded for it in the first two years of his career, but in this most recent season it has drawn more criticism, like the ‘W’ eating a few weeks ago.

Winston has also been letting emotions get to him on the sideline, like last week when he barreled through Shelton Quarles to contest a referee call.

My resolution for Winston is to temper that passion and to remember that outbursts like last week reflect poorly on the entire organization.

I believe that some of Winston’s slow starts in games have to do with him getting too excited, so a small “chill pill” might have a positive impact on his on-field game as well. Buccaneer fans shouldn’t be worried too much about Winston’s on-field play, but for him to become a true franchise quarterback he has to resolve to better control his emotions.
