Kansas City Chiefs

In their exit from the playoffs, the Chiefs also enter a crossroads for their franchise. Will or won’t Alex Smith be back in 2018? Probably not.

Which means the team is facing life with a mostly inexperienced second-year quarterback in Patrick Mahomes.

The team made the difficult decision to move on from Jamaal Charles in the interest of future success, so there is no doubt they are capable of making hard decisions.

Here are the names entering free-agency in 2018 from the Chiefs:

Punter, Dustin Colquitt

Running Back, C.J. Spiller

Fullback, Anthony Sherman

Defensive End, Jarvis Jenkins

Guard, Jordan Devey

Defensive Tackle, Stefan Charles

Defensive Tackle, Bennie Logan

Cornerback, Steven Terrell

Quarterback, Tyler Bray

Cornerback, Phillip Gaines

Guard, Zach Fulton

Wide Receiver, Albert Wilson

Cornerback, Kenneth Acker

Wide Receiver, De’Anthony Thomas

Linebacker, Kevin Pierre-Louis

Of these names, the most likely to walk has to be Spiller. The team really has no need for him. Evidence of this is the fact he made an appearance in just one game when he had two carries for zero yards against the Oakland Raiders.

Most likely to be retained I feel like will be Gaines. The 26-year old corner isn’t going to demand top dollar, but he’s been with the team for the entirety of his four-year career.

This means he’s been raised in his NFL time in the same system which produced guys like Marcus Peters, and even started three games this season with three passes defended.

Giving up on him at this point could prove to be costly, as it also seems likely the Chiefs will terminate the contract of Darrelle Revis which would clear nearly $4 Million in cap space without penalty.

Kansas City has to find a way to clear at least $9 Million and find even more room to bring in potential free-agents themselves and their draft picks.

Losing Revis and his $4 Million salary, would certainly be a start. Freeing quarterback Alex Smith would clear another $17 Million, making this an almost certainty at this point.

For the Buccaneers, Gaines would be the likely candidate from this group to garner their interest. Although, there is a nice group of young linemen to test for depth.
