There seemed to be at least some questions about the backup quarterback situation for the Buccaneers heading into 2018. Those questions appear to be gone now, as the team is reportedly re-signing Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The Buccaneers are re-signing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud confirmed that the two sides have agreed to terms.

Since the end of the 2017 season, there has been talk about the backup quarterback position for Tampa Bay. Fitzpatrick was set to become a free agent. Ryan Griffin, who the team reportedly is fond of, is still on the roster. Former Bucs quarterback Mike Glennon will soon be available once the Bears release him. There was speculation about bringing Glennon back or giving the backup job to Ryan Griffin, who is still on the roster.

A Fitzpatrick return seemed to be talked about the least, but the Bucs made their move on Thursday before the new league year begins next week.

Fitzpatrick, who turns 36 in November, went 2-1 as a starter last year. He played in place of an injured Jameis Winston, completing 58.9 percent of his passes for 1,103 yards and seven touchdowns to three interceptions. 2018 will be his fourteenth season.

The move brings a couple of questions to mind. What happens with Griffin? Does this negate the idea of the Bucs drafting a quarterback in the later rounds? Regardless, it’s a signing that could have big implications on the team’s success in 2018. The ongoing Uber investigation surrounding Winston continues to be an issue. Regardless of what is found, a suspension could be coming. No one knows what the length will be, but if there is a suspension of any kind, Fitzpatrick will apparently be the guy to step in. Of course, that doesn’t take any kind of injury into account.
